Saltwater Pros and Cons

When it comes to building a new pool, one consideration is whether to get it with freshwater or saltwater.

While there are some benefits to owning a saltwater pool (as we’ll discuss in this article), it’s not typically advised. Saltwater pools have various drawbacks that aren’t always discussed openly.

In this article, we’ll explain all the pros and cons of saltwater pools, helping you make a smart choice (without any nasty surprises).

How Do Saltwater Pools Work?

First, let’s clarify how saltwater pools actually work. Contrary to popular belief, saltwater pools are not filled with ocean water. Rather, pool salt is added to the water, then the saltwater runs through a special generator that converts the salt to chlorine. So saltwater pools still contain chlorine, but the chlorine is produced in a different way compared to traditional chlorine pools.

Cons of Saltwater Pools

  • More costly upfront

The initial cost of installing a saltwater pool is higher than a traditional chlorine pool, mainly due to the cost of the salt chlorine generator which can be $1,000-$2,500+.

  • Can have some issues with salt scaling

The salt content in saltwater pools can sometimes cause scaling on pool surfaces, liners, fixtures and equipment. Proper monitoring and maintenance can prevent damaging salt scale build-up. It’s also important to note that salt can degrade pumps and other machinery, meaning it’s likely you’ll have to replace machine parts more frequently than if you had a freshwater pool.

  • Requires electricity to make chlorine

The salt chlorinator does require electricity to convert the pool salt into chlorine. So a saltwater pool isn’t entirely chemical-free and will slightly increase your electricity bill.

  • Requires more expertise

Saltwater pool maintenance is a bit more complex than traditional pools. It’s important to work with a qualified pool professional who has experience with saltwater pool systems.

Pros of Saltwater Pools

If you have your heart set on a salty pool, here are some of the benefits you can enjoy:

  • Can be used in any size pool

Whether you have a small plunge pool or a large lap pool, a saltwater system can work in any size or shape of pool. Saltwater is a flexible sanitizing option for all pool designs.

  • Produces less chloramines

Saltwater pools produce up to 66% less chloramines, the irritating by-products of chlorine sanitation, compared to traditional chlorine pools. This means the water will likely be gentler and less irritating.

  • No strong chlorine smell

Since saltwater pools have lower chloramine levels, you won’t get that strong chlorine smell often associated with swimming pools. The water has no real taste or odor.

  • Gentler on skin, eyes and hair

Many people find that swimming in a saltwater pool is gentler on their skin, eyes and hair compared to a traditional chlorine pool. The lower chloramine levels are less harsh and drying.

Is a Saltwater Pool Right for You?

A saltwater swimming pool typically has a higher upfront cost and more complex maintenance needs. However, if you are willing to pay the premium, you can enjoy a pool that is gentler on the eyes and has less of a chlorine smell.
