How to choose a pool builder

What to look for & what to ask...

Selecting the right builder for your project is vital to the planning process. Swimming pool design and construction is a highly specialized field with technology that changes constantly, so choosing a professional who stays current is essential. Here’s a guide to help you find a trusted and professional pool builder:

How to choose a trusted and professional pool builder

There are a few things to consider when beginning the search for a pool builder:

  • Is the builder is a member of a professional organization like the Master Pools Guild (MPG):

MPG members are meticulously hand chosen based on several criteria including: reputation in their local market, design style, professionalism and scrupulous attention to detail. They follow a Code of Ethics and Business Practices. The Guild provides members with a strong support network to continually improve by offering education and training keeping MPG members at the forefront of their field.

  • Does the builder have a professional place of business:

Having a place of business shows financial resources, stability, an investment in the community and accessibility for you. A builder with roots in the community and an investment in their reputation will be in a better position to assist you long term.

  • Is the builder is committed to education:

The Builder is involved in industry education programs, technical seminars and trade shows where new ideas and products are displayed. This means they are dedicated to constant improvement and keeping current in the industry. MPG members often participate in Genesis, Inc. continuing education and attend the International Pool Spa Patio Expo (US), Piscine Global (Europe), SPATA (UK, Ireland) SPLASH and The Pool and Spa Show (Australia). Ask how often the Builder attends.

  • Does the builder have transparent and ethical practices

The Builder presents their products fairly and on the basis of their merits without attacking the competition. This means that builder doesn’t bad mouth other builders, insist on cash only or have unethical business practices.

Questions to ask a pool builder before hiring them

  • How many projects have they undertaken?

Ask how long the Builder has been in business? How many and what type of pools have they built in that time? It’s important to know that the builder you choose is experienced in the type and design of pool you want. Choose a builder who has been in business for many years with a proven track record.

  • Do they have general liability insurance?

Make sure that the Builder can provide you with proof of current General Liability Insurance and Worker’s Compensation Insurance (in areas where this is required). It is also good to compare warranties as they can vary dramatically, and ask to see it up front. Be wary of Builders who will not provide a warranty and always read your contract.

  • Do they have references and a strong online presence?

The Builder can provide you with a reference list of recent and older projects that they have completed. Also take a look at their website. Verify it is up to date and appears in good order and spend a little time checking out their online reviews and their social media accounts.

  • Ask for the price – Consider if it makes sense

The lowest price isn’t necessarily the best value. The old adage “you get what you pay for” applies to pools as well. A swimming pool is a large investment and you want to ensure yours is built with quality and beauty throughout.

Remember: Time spent reviewing the items above will help lay a solid foundation of understanding and trust as you begin your project with the builder you select. If you’re looking for elite,  award winning pool builders, you can trust our members. Search for an MPG pool builder in your area.
